Instructions

Choose fabrics that compliment the season in which the wedding will take place. Lighter fabrics like chiffon are best for spring and summer weddings, while velvet and satin are suitable for receptions that will take place in the fall or winter. Since the head table should be especially attractive, a strip of fabric can be placed down the center of table, and the larger tableware such as platters and pitchers can be placed on the strip. Fabric can also be tied to the backs of the chairs that will be used at the wedding table. If the bride and groom have chosen a pair of colors for their wedding, the chairs for the bridal party can be decorated with one fabric color, and the chairs for the bride and groom can be another.

Create larger centerpieces for the head table by using over-sized vases and flower arrangements. The flowers can be in the colors of the wedding or reception, but large white roses and baby's breath are always an attractive addition to any wedding centerpiece. Vases in metallic shades will work with any other colors--bronze is ideal for weddings in warmer weather, since a bronze vase will compliment orange, yellow, or red flowers well. Deep colors like hunter green or burgundy will pop next to a gold vase. You can use one huge centerpiece for the head table, or a large flower arrangement with two or three smaller versions of the arrangement on each side.

Apply strings or rope to the edges of the table or the edges of the tablecloth in order to make the head table look especially festive. These borders should also be in the colors of the reception, and can match any flowers that are already on the table. Metallic colors, or even black, will look great against white tablecloths, and adding white or beige satin rope to darker-colored tablecloths will definitely make the head table stand out. Strings for borders can usually be found at your local craft store.
