How to Make a Toy Pop Gun

There seem to be as many types of toy guns as there are children who like to play with them. You can make your own toy gun that will make a popping sound when fired. You will need a few household items and a party popper purchased at a hobby store or party supply shop. Your toy gun may fire only once, but it will definitely make a loud and resounding impact on those who hear it. Adult supervision is necessary if a child is making the pop gun.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the party popper in the left hand by its thin neck. Insert one of the blades of the scissors into the cardboard lid on the bottom of the party popper. Wiggle the blade of the scissors to loosen the cardboard lid from the party popper. Pull off the lid

    • 2

Empty the contents inside the party popper into the trash.

    • 3

Make a slit in the side of the party popper with the scissors. Pull the party popper’s side apart.

    • 4

Pull out the white cartridge from inside of the party popper--making sure to carefully pull the string through the neck and out with the cartridge.

    • 5

Remove the metal point from the end of the disposable plastic pen with the pliers. Unscrew the pen. Remove the end cap from the other side of the pen with the pliers.

    • 6

Unscrew the disposable plastic pen. Pull the ink tube from the bottom half of the pen and discard.

    • 7

Insert the string into the back half of the disposable plastic pen. Pull the string slightly out of the back end of the back half where the end cap was.

    • 8

Insert the white cartridge into the back half of the disposable plastic pen. Screw the front half of the disposable plastic pen back onto the back half.

    • 9

Wrap duct tape around the seam between the two halves of the disposable plastic pen. Wrap duct tape around the entire pen.

    • 10

Insert a foam pea into the end of the disposable plastic pen where the metal point was.

    • 11

Aim the toy pop gun you have made at a safe target in your backyard, for example, a tree or rock. Pull the string to fire your toy pop gun and propel the foam pea projectile.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear work gloves and protective eye gear when firing the toy pop gun you have made.

  • The disposable plastic pen can shatter if there is not enough duct tape wound around it.
