How to Change a Headlight on a 1997 Honda Civic

The headlights on the 1997 Honda Civic are critical when driving at night or in bad weather. When one light goes out, a driver's visibility is significantly reduced. A burned-out headlight also makes it more difficult for other drivers to spot you. Replace your headlights immediately if they burn out and ensure your safety while driving at night or in inclement conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the Civic and lift the power steering reservoir off the mounting bracket if you're changing out the driver-side headlight. The reservoir, on the driver's side of the engine compartment, blocks access to the headlight.

    • 2

Squeeze the left and right side of the electrical connector to release the locking tabs, and pull out to disconnect it from the bulb.

    • 3

Grip the top tab of the headlight bulb weather protector, which is the rubber ring that sits around the bulb, and pull it off the headlight assembly.

    • 4

Press down on the small metal wire that holds the bulb in the assembly and pull it outward. The wire does not detach from the assembly but swings to the side.

    • 5

Pull the bulb out of the headlight assembly and discard it.

    • 6

Insert the replacement bulb into the headlight assembly, taking care to line the tabs on the bulb with the slots on the headlight assembly, and press the small wire forward to secure the bulb.

    • 7

Push the weather ring back onto the assembly with the word "Top" facing up.

    • 8

Plug the electrical connector onto the back of the bulb until you hear the click of the locking tabs.

    • 9

Place the power steering fluid reservoir back into the mounting bracket.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 2 through 9 to replace the passenger-side headlight bulb.
