Setting up a wireless network with Windows Vista can be beneficial for a small office or at home. Whenever there is more than one computer being used, a wireless network will connect them to allow file, printer and Internet sharing. Also, by setting up a wireless network, any hardware with wireless capabilities can conveniently be used without having to remain stationary, such as a laptop. Microsoft Vista makes it easy to set up a wireless home or small-business network.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a wireless router and/or modem. This equipment may also be leased with the Internet service provider (ISP) for a minimal monthly fee. However, purchasing this equipment will save money in the long run.

    • 2

Connect the Ethernet, Internet and cable cords to the modem and wireless router according to the router's manufacturer instructions to establish a wireless hub.

    • 3

Click the "Start" button on the desktop toolbar. Choose "Control Panel."

    • 4

Scroll down to "Network and Sharing Center." Under "Tasks," click on "Set up a connection or network."

    • 5

Choose a connection option. Click "Set up a wireless router or access point." Click "Next" to proceed.

    • 6

Detect network settings on the computer automatically with the wizard. The wizard will also configure the wireless router or access point and enable printer and file sharing among the connected computers.

    • 7

Configure network hardware manually if your device does not configure automatically. (The computer will prompt for an action if this occurs.) Select "Configure this device manually," which will configure the wireless router to connect to the Internet.

    • 8

Fill out the necessary information. When the web page opens it will ask for the network name (SSID) and a Security Type and Key or passphrase. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) can provide this information. After this information is entered, the computer may need to be rebooted before the wireless network will be established.

Tips & Warnings

  • To connect additional computers to an established wireless network, click the "Start" button, choose "Connect to" and select the wireless network. Enter any security passphrases and reboot to establish a link.

  • Make sure all cables and cords are securely inserted into the modem and router.
