An MP3 player stores digital files for easy playback.

An MP3 player is a portable digital media player that stores audio files in MP3 format. MP3 uses compression technology that allows the file to be of comparable quality to the same audio in WAV or AIF format at about 1/10th the size, according to File Info. Because of its high quality and low file size compression, most portable music players support MP3, as do most desktop players, meaning that you can easily share the files between an MP3 player and a desktop or laptop computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the MP3 player to the computer using a USB cord. The type of cord you will need will vary depending on the device. Cables To Go, a cable vendor, identifies at least eight different USB jacks. The USB mini-B (5-pin) is popular among small electronics such as cell phones and MP3 players, while the popular iPod has a special USB 2.0 connector for faster data transmission.

Open the MP3 player's library. One way to do this is through a software interface. iTunes is the interface that Apple uses, while its mainstream competitor, the Zune, uses a program called Zune Marketplace.

You can also view the media by going to "My Computer" and then double-clicking the icon representing the MP3 player. This will open a window listing the folders contained within the device and you should be able to see the media on the device by clicking the "Library" or "Media" folder.

Drag the desired MP3 file from the library onto the desktop. The computer will automatically begin copying the item to the desktop, which may take several minutes, depending on the size of the file. Once it has completed, you will have successfully created a backup copy on the computer's hard drive. You may want to move it from the desktop into a folder.

Use either the "Eject" button in the software interface or right-click the icon representing the player and select "Eject" to disconnect the player. If you fail to eject the player before unplugging the USB cord, you risk crashing the MP3 player's hard drive and losing data.
