How to Put Hair in a Bun Using a Sock

Use a rolled sock to put your hair up in a bun.

Many girls and women simply call this updo hairstyle a "sock bun" because you construct it using an old sock as the foundation of the bun. This style is especially suitable for anyone with layered hair that is not quite long enough to make into a standard bun because the sock provides a foundation for the bun and you must only have enough hair to arrange over the sock. Add a scrunchie or a fancy barrette around the sock bun and you are finished styling your hair.

Things You'll Need

• Old clean sock
• Scissors
• Hairbrush
• 2 thin ponytail holders
• Bobby pins
• Scrunchie, ribbon, barrettes or clips

Instructions

1. Cut off the toe portion from the sock with scissors. Roll the sock up starting at the toe and continuing until you reach the top of the sock. It will then resemble a doughnut.

2. Brush your hair back into a tight ponytail and secure it with a thin ponytail holder.

3. Slide the rolled sock over your ponytail and push it all the way down until it rests snugly against your head while covering the ponytail holder.

4. Tilt your head down slightly and spread sections of the ponytail over the rolled sock. Spread the hair evenly over the rolled sock until no sock shows. Then place a second ponytail holder over the bun to hold your hair in place around the rolled sock. Do not tighten this second ponytail holder; simply placing it over the sock bun once will be sufficient.

5. Gather the hair that extends out from beneath the second ponytail holder and wrap it around the base of the bun. Secure the hair in place with bobby pins.

6. Place a scrunchie or a ribbon around the sock bun to embellish it, or add fancy barrettes or clips around the base of the bun as accents.
