How to Convert MPEG-4 Into MP3 Format

MPEG-4 files are compressed audio files that are usually associated with the iTunes digital media player. Some users opt to convert these files to MP3, because MPEG-4 isn't compatible with most media players. MP3 is the most common form of digital audio playback, which makes listening much easier and less technical for the user. MPEG-4 files can be converted on-line with the use of audio conversion tools that are deemed as open-source software, which is free of charge.

Double-click the iTunes icon on your computer's desktop screen. (See "Tips" for iTunes information if you do not have the media player application installed to your computer.)

    • 2

Access the iTunes "Preferences" in the media player application menu at the top of the iTunes screen.

    • 3

Select the "Advanced" option in the Preferences' collapsible menu. A pop-up screen will open with a list of advanced actions that can be taken.

    • 4

Click the bar below the "Import With" section, and change the output codec to MP3. Close the "Advanced Options" and "Preferences" windows.

    • 5

Locate the MPEG-4 file you want to convert. Right-click the file and select the "Convert To MP3" action. Allow the conversion process to take its course.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have iTunes, you will need to download and install it to your computer. (See "Resources" for iTunes download link.)

  • Web-based converters such as MediaConverter.org can also be used to convert MPEG-4 files. (See "Resources" for web-based options as well.)

  • You will end up with two audio files after the conversion, as the process will create a duplicate of the MPEG-4 file formatted in MP3. Simply delete the MPEG-4 file if you do not need it to save storage space on your hard drive.
