Wind a bobbin with thread

Any seamstress will tell you that winding the bobbin is the trickiest part of threading a sewing machine. Threading a machine is usually easy and intuitive, but winding a bobbin takes a few additional steps. All Singer 600 series machines operate basically the same, so if you have a Singer 604E, follow these directions to wind a new bobbin.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the hand wheel to raise the needle to the highest position. This will give you room to work with the reel holder underneath the presser foot.

    • 2

Insert an empty bobbin into the reel holder. Slide the metal plate open with your fingernail and lift the reel latch. Remove the existing bobbin if one is already inserted. Place the empty bobbin in the holder, wide end up, and close the latch.

    • 3

Pull thread through the needle and loop over the screw on the side of the presser foot. Hold the thread tightly. Push the reel wind button down and press the foot pedal to run the machine. Thread will wind around the bobbin. Stop the machine when the bobbin is full.

    • 4

Move the reel wind button to the left to release it. The machine is now back in sew mode. Close the metal slide plate and begin sewing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always start with an empty bobbin. If there's a small amount of thread left on a bobbin, unscrew the two sides to quickly remove any thread remnants.

  • Make sure the presser foot is lifted throughout the process to prevent any tension on the thread as you wind the bobbin. Thread tension can cause breaks in the thread or damage to your machine.
