With a few household items and a jeweler's polishing cloth, a wedding band or other gold rings can look brand new in less than 20 minutes.

Removing Scratches From Gold Rings

Apply equal parts soap and warm water to a damp washcloth. Scrub the gold band with the soapy washcloth to remove surface impurities.

Rinse the band in cold water and let it air-dry.

In an 8-ounce cup, combine 1 part ammonia with 6 parts warm water. (Do not attempt to clean a gold band with ammonia only.)

Place the gold band into the ammonia-and-water solution and let the band soak for no longer than 1 minute.

Remove the band from the ammonia solution. Inspect the surface to ensure that all dirt has been removed. Dry the gold band with tissue.

To buff out scratches, put on latex gloves. Grip the ring firmly in one hand and the jeweler's polishing cloth in the other. Buff the surface of the gold ring with the polishing cloth until all surface scratches are removed.
