Turn off the power to the dishwasher by unplugging it or switching off the home's breaker switch. Built-in dishwashers are usually hardwired into the home's electrical system and must be turned off from the breaker. Portable units may be unplugged from the wall outlet.

Remove the screws and kickplate from the lower section of the dishwasher. Open the door of the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack. Remove the center bolt that holds the spray tower and spray arm in place. Take out the spray tower, arm and filter.

Disconnect the wires from the motor assembly, making a note of how the wires are configured so you can install the new wires onto the right terminals. You can also take a picture of the wiring harness with a digital camera to use as a reference point if you will be installing a replacement motor.

Remove the mounting bolts that hold the motor onto the dishwasher unit. Lift the old motor out and disconnect the drain hose and pump. You can now remove the motor from your GE dishwasher and discard it or take it in for repairs.
