How to Make an Angel Costume for a Child
We all think of our children as angels at times, but there may come a moment when a church play or Christmas pageant will require your child to look the part as well. You can put together a beautiful angel costume with just a few yards of material assuming that you are handy with a sewing machine; or with a white night gown if you have fewer sewing skills. So grab the glitter, and bring out the cherub in your child! Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- About 2 ½ yards of white fabric
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- 2 wire coat hangers
- 1 pair white pantyhose
- Roll of white duct tape
- White glue
- Small paintbrush
- Gold glitter
- A 7 feet of thin gold cord or ribbon
- 1 ½ foot of Christmas garland
Instructions
-
Robe
-
1
Measure your child from the shoulder to the top of foot. Double the measurement. Cut your material.
-
2
Fold the material in half from top to bottom. Make a mark in the center of the folded end. Draw a line about 3 inches in both directions. Cut along this line to make a hole for the head.
-
-
3
Slip the cloth over the child's head like a poncho. Pin the two sides of cloth together at the armpits, waist and hemline in the shape of your robe. Make the robe wider at the hemline than at the waist. Pin about six inches below the wrist to produce a flared sleeve.
-
4
Carefully pull the robe off over the child's head. Lay the material - still folded and pinned - flat. Draw an outline from the hemline pin to the waist pin to the underarm pin to the wrist pin. This is your sew line. Draw another line about 1/2 inch outside of this line. Cut along this outside line.
-
5
Sew together and hem the neck, sleeves and hemline to avoid fraying.
Wings
-
6
Remove the hooks from the coat hangers with wire cutters.
-
7
Form the hangers into a wing shape with the pliers.
-
8
Cover each hanger with a stocking leg. Twist the stocking around the neck of the hanger and tape it down. Cut off excess stocking.
-
9
Tape the two wings together. Make sure that there are no pointy ends of the hangers exposed that could poke your child.
-
10
Paint a feathery pattern onto the wings with glue and sprinkle with glitter.
Tying on the Wings
-
11
Fold the cord in half. Tie it around the center of the wings with about a four inch loop pointing down and the two ends of the cord pointing up. Sturdily wrap a few layers of duct tape around center piece over the knot.
-
12
Position the wings in the center of your child's back with the tops showing just above the shoulders.
-
13
Drape the end of cord over the shoulders and then cross over the chest. Bring the cord around the back, through the loop, back to front and tie.
-
14
Tape a section of garland in a circle and wear on the head as a halo.
-
15
Go barefoot or wear white or gold slippers.

Tips & Warnings
The cloth, cord and garland estimates given are generous since a child may be a 20 pound toddler or a 100 pound pre-teen. You may want to take measurements before buying your material.
