iPods can store music, even if you aren't connected to the internet

You don't need to be online to transfer songs onto an iPod--when you download music from the Internet, it's saved onto your PC. To put songs on an iPod or take them off, all you need is a fully charged iPod, a USB connector cable and a computer with a music management system like iTunes.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • USB cable

Instructions

    • 1

Open your music management software of choice. Although there are other choices (see Resources), iTunes is the default way to transfer songs from your computer to your iPod.

    • 2

Plug one end of the white iPod USB cord into the device and the other into a USB port on your computer. The computer will automatically recognize the device.

    • 3

Drag the track titles in iTunes' Library onto the iPod icon. Once you drop the track over the icon, it automatically makes a copy of the song on the iPod.

    • 4

Leave the iPod plugged into the computer until you have transferred all desired tracks onto your device. Once finished, click the "Eject" icon located to the right of the iPod icon.

    • 5

After a few seconds, look at the screen of your iPod and make sure it says it's okay to unplug the iPod. Now unplug the USB cable from both the iPod and the computer.

    • 6

Check your iPod as a final step to make sure that your music transferred successfully. Scroll through the artists and find the songs you just put on. If you put something on that you want to take off, you must plug the iPod back into the computer in order to do so. All uploads and removals must take place in iTunes while the iPod is plugged in via the USB cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have any digital music files on your computer without internet, the only way to transfer them is through ripping a CD. Generally, you will have to name the tracks manually if you don't have the internet (which would find the track names automatically). Once songs have been uploaded from a CD to your computer, you may follow the above process to put them onto your iPod.
