Instructions

    • 1

Choose some long branches such as birch, willow or mulberry that are easily bendable.

    • 2

Twist two branches together. Keep adding and twisting branches until you have a 20-foot length. Use branches that are about 1-inch thick. Repeat to make two 20-foot lengths.

    • 3

Drive the four stakes 2 feet into the ground where you want to place your natural arbor. Put two stakes on one side 18 inches apart. Place the other two stakes 18 inches apart 4 feet opposite the other two.

    • 4

Stand one of the lengths of branches up against one of the wooden stakes. Tie it to the stake using wire. Twist the wire around seven to eight times to make sure the branches are secure. Do this at the bottom the middle and the top of the stake.

    • 5

Bend the length of branches carefully to make it reach the opposite stake. Secure it to the stakes with the wire as well.

    • 6

Repeat with the other length of twisted branches.

    • 7

Get some branches that stand 2 to 3 feet tall. Insert these into the ground at the sides, on the inside of the arbor to help stabilize it. Secure the tops of these short branches to the arbor with wire.

    • 8

Use shorter branches to make crossbars to go up and over the arbor the rest of the way. Make sure to use the wire to secure these to the arbor and also to help secure your arbor in place.

    • 9

Plant some vines at the outside base of the natural arbor and allow these to grow up and over the arbor to help provide a natural entryway to your garden.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut fresh branches to make your arbor and then build the arbor within one day to keep the branches pliable and easy to work with.

  • Protect your hands when twisting the branches by wearing some work gloves.
