How to Decoupage Glass Stemware
Decoupage is a very simple craft technique that produces elegant results. The word decoupage is derived from the French word decouper, which means to cut. Using this technique, fabric or paper shapes are glued onto the glass. The shapes are then coated with a sealant to protect them from deteriorating. The decoupage technique is used on glassware, stemware, baskets and even furniture items. The hardest part of decoupage is choosing which design you want to apply.

1
Locate magazine or catalog images or fabric that you want to place onto the stemware. Measure the height of the glass from the top of the stem to the top rim so that you will know what size images will fit.
-
2
Cut out each image using scissors. Cut the images out carefully along the perimeter since the image will be clearly visible through the glass.
-
-
3
Clean the inside and outside of each piece of glass stemware piece using glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth to remove all dirt and surface oil from the glass.
-
4
Place a layer of newspaper onto a flat work surface to protect it from the glue. Place one glass upside down on the newspaper with the stem pointing upward.
-
5
Turn one of the images face up on the work surface. Squeeze 1/2 to 1 tsp. of white craft glue onto the foam brush and apply the glue in a very thin layer across the entire front surface of the image. Hold the image down with your fingertip while you move the foam brush all the way to the edges of the image.
-
6
Pick the image up gently and turn it so that the front of the image is facing the glass. Place the image onto the outside of the glass in the desired location. Smooth out the image with your fingers to remove wrinkles and then brush the image with the foam brush.
-
7
Apply any other images desired in the same manner. With regards to design, you can place two or three images spaced equally around the stemware glass. Another option is to overlap the images so that the entire outer surface of the glass is covered with images.
-
8
Apply 1 tsp. of craft glue to the foam brush and brush the glue over the entire outer surface of the glass to seal the images. Apply additional glue to the brush as needed to completely coat the glass. Allow the glue to dry for approximately one hour. The craft glue appears white when first applied, but dries clear.
-
9
Apply an second layer of craft glue to the entire outer surface of the glass using the foam brush. Allow the glue to dry for an additional hour.
-
10
Open a can of clear water-based acrylic sealant and apply a coat to the entire surface of the glass. This seals the glass and protects the images and glue from deteriorating.
