How to Remove the Starter on a 2001 Dodge Ram

The starter motor on a 2001 Dodge Ram does a lot of heavy-duty work, turning over the large engine using just the power from the battery. Eventually, the electric starter motor will give out and will need to be replaced. Otherwise, the truck won't start. On the Ram, the starter is easy to find and replace although a bit heavy in weight. It should take about 20 minutes to remove the old starter.

Instructions

    • 1

Pop the hood. Use an open-end wrench to remove the negative terminal on the battery and follow that up by doing the same on the positive terminal. Raise the truck using the jack and set it on jack stands.

    • 2

Crawl underneath the truck and locate the starter on the passenger side of the engine, between the engine and the transmission, behind the exhaust pipe. Remove the harness from the starter by hand, then unbolt the battery connection using the open-end wrench.

    • 3

Unbolt the starter motor from the block using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket. Certain motors may also have a support bracket equipped so unbolt that if necessary. Carefully lift the starter out of the truck, being careful to support it with both hands as it is quite heavy.
