How to Crochet a Skully Hatthumbnail
Use variegated yarn to crochet a rainbow skully hat, or go with a solid color for a traditional look.

Skully hats are a great gift item for people of any age or gender. Worn just down to partially cover the ears, a skully hat is ideal for any cool-weather days. You can crochet a skully hat in one color for a simple style or embellish it with striped patterns and embroidered designs. If you can crochet in the round, you can crochet a skully hat.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • Crochet hook size US I
    • Scissors
    • Large eye blunt needle
      • 1

Make two chain stitches and stitch five half double crochet stiches in the second chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain one.

      • 2

Increase the size of your circle by crocheting two half double crochet stitches in every stitch around and joining with a slip stitch. For every subsequent round, you will crochet X number of half double crochet stitches followed by two half double crochets in the next stitch. So for instance, in your second round X will be one; in round three X will be two and in round four it will be three. Increase X by one for every round until the circumference of the hat measures approximately two inches smaller than the circumference of your head.

      • 3

Crochet evenly around for the next few rounds. To do this, chain one and make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch around, joining with a slip stitch to form a circle. Keep crocheting in this manner until the hat is long enough to just cover the wearer's forehead and the tops of his ears.

      • 4

For the final round, join with a slip stitch and then cut your working yarn, leaving a four-inch tail. Make one more slip stitch to secure the yarn and then weave in the loose ends using a large-eye blunt needle.

    Tips & Warnings

    • For a striped look, crochet in one color until the last five rows. Then switch to a new color for one row, back to the old color for two rows, then the new color for one row, and old color for the last two rows.
