How to Get Yahoo Messenger With Voice to Work With Vista
Yahoo! Voice allows you to make and receive telephone calls from your computer. The type of call you make determines the price you must pay for the call. PC to PC calls are free. Calls involving land-line or mobile telephone numbers will cost you around 1 cent per minute, depending upon the geographical location you are calling. In order to use Yahoo! Voice you must be using Yahoo! Messenger version 7.5 or higher. Your computer must also be equipped with a sound card and microphone.

Verify that your Vista system is equipped with a sound card and microphone by clicking on your "Start" Windows button. Select "Control Panel" and "Device Manager." Look under "Sound, Video, & Game Controllers." If you do not see any devices listed, it means that you do not have a sound card or microphone installed on your computer. You can easily purchase a sound card and external microphone or USB headset from a local computer retailer.

Visit the Yahoo! website. Click on the option to download and install the Yahoo! Messenger client.

Log in to Yahoo! Messenger with your Yahoo! ID. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID you can sign up for one on the Yahoo! website.

Click on the "Y! Voice" option that is located above the "Contacts" tab. Click "Video & Voice." Select "Video & Voice" in the "Categories" box.

Click the drop-down menu for your voice devices to ensure that the right microphone and sound card are selected. Place a check-mark in the box labeled "Ring PC Speaker." If you are using a USB headset, be sure to select the option at the bottom of the window to "Allow USB Devices to Access Messenger."

Click the "Apply" button. Click "OK."

Make a "PC to PC" call with Yahoo! Voice. PC-to-PC calls are free. Just make sure the person you are calling has Yahoo! Voice installed on her computer. Also make sure that you add her Yahoo! ID to your "Buddy List." To call her, just click on the microphone next to her name in your Buddy List to activate the call.

Receive calls from a mobile or land-line phone with Yahoo! Voice. To receive these types of calls, click on the "Y! Voice" option again that is located above the "Contacts" tab. Select the option to "Get a Phone Number For My PC." You can then choose the telephone number you want and pay the $2.49 monthly recurring charge to secure your number. A number is required in order to receive calls via the Yahoo! Messenger client.

Call mobile or land-line telephone numbers with Yahoo! Voice. To do this, click on the "Y! Voice" option. Select the option to "Call a Phone Number From My PC." You must have prepaid credits in order to place your call. Click the "Sign Up" button if you have not yet purchased credits. The prepaid credits are sold in $10 and $25 increments.

Click on the "Y! Voice" option. Select the "No Incoming Calls" option if you do not wish to receive incoming calls when your Yahoo Messenger client is open.
