Crisis counseling is a specialized field within mental health counseling. Crisis counselors are responsible for helping people who are going through stress, anxiety and grief, because of an emotionally intense or traumatic event. Counselors ensure that individuals are able to express their thoughts and emotions in a safe environment and prevent them from harming themselves or others. Those working in this field only meet with people for a short period time and make sure that they get any continuing help, if necessary. According to Indeed.com, as of 2010, the average salary for a crisis counselor is $40,000 per year.
