How to Remove Windows XP & Install Linux
Linux is an operating system created to meet the needs of most computer users. There are more than 500 releases of Linux, from an iPod and other handheld versions to stable desktop and laptop distributions. As of 2010, the most popular of these releases is Ubuntu. You can install Ubuntu on most computers in a short time and replace Windows XP.

Download Ubuntu to your desktop.

Insert the blank CD-R and open the CD creation software that comes with XP. From the file list, choose "Burn Disc Image" and select the Ubuntu file from your desktop. Click "Burn Disc" and wait for the process to complete.

Restart your computer with the new CD still in the drive. When your system boots into the disc, select "Install Ubuntu."

Follow the system-specific instructions, such as language, time zone, user name and password. At the partition screen, choose the entire hard drive to install Ubuntu. Select "Install Ubuntu" at the end of these steps and it installs on your system, replacing XP.
