How to Crochet an Evening Gown
Crochet is made from fine thread and in delicate patterns creates an elegant fabric that is well-suited for evening gowns. The time invested in crafting such a piece pays off in the heirloom quality that results, and will guarantee that your dress is unique and fits you perfectly. The dress crafted from the pattern below will be a sheath dress with a straight neckline and shoulder straps.

1
Choose a crochet stitch motif for the body of the dress. A circular lace pattern, such as a snowflake or interior portion of a doily, works well. You may want to crochet several samples to determine which pattern you will use.
-
2
Measure your chosen motif sample for gauge. You will need the height and width of the sample, lightly stretched to reflect the tension it will be under when combined with other motifs to create the dress.

3
Measure yourself from your desired neckline height to the bottom hem of the dress, as well as around yourself at your widest measurement. This might be your bust, tummy, or hips. Calculate how many motifs it will take to create the dress with the following calculation: divide your dress length (neckline to hem) by the height of your motif, then divide the dress width (around your widest measurement) by the width of the motif. Multiply these two resulting answers, rounded to a whole number, for the total number of motifs you will need to make.
-
4
Crochet the desired number of motifs.
-
5
Whip stitch the motifs together into a rectangle, with the height and width equaling the number of motifs calculated earlier for your dress height and width measurements.
-
6
Whipstitch the rectangle into a tube by attaching the side seams together, starting at the top of the dress. If your dress is knee length, complete the entire side seam. If your dress hem goes past the knee, stop whipstitching at the knee to create a walking slit. You may choose to put this slit on the side, back, or front of the dress, simply by turning the dress around.
-
7
Measure for the straps by trying on the dress and measuring across the shoulder. Crochet two straps as follows: chain stitch for the desired strap length, ch 3, turn, dc in each ch, bind off. Stitch the straps to the dress.
-
8
Wear the crocheted dress over top of the slip or under-dress.

Tips & Warnings
The ideal size for motifs is between 3 and 4 inches wide.
Embellish your evening gown with iridescent beads or sequins for a subtle sparkle as you move.
For a more fitted look, crochet smaller motifs for the waist area by using a smaller hook.
You may want to tack the crocheted dress to the slip at the straps or neckline to hold them in line.
