Rifle scopes offer significantly greater accuracy and range to the shooter. However, to function effectively these scopes need to be properly sighted at the desired distance. While this can be a quite a chore, all your work may be for naught if the scope rings are not adequately tightened. Firing a scoped weapon with loose scope rings will result in poor accuracy and can damage your scope. The best solution is to obtain a snug fit that will hold the scope in place at all times.

Things You'll Need

  • Small cup
  • Thin strips of felt

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the upper scope ring assembly with the screwdriver or Allen wrench, depending on the scope ring model. Place all screws in the small cup to prevent them from rolling off your work surface.

    • 2

Lift away the scope and place it to the side.

    • 3

Tighten the screws connecting the lower scope assembly to the scope rail. Do so in a sequential pattern by tightening one screw on the left side, one screw on the right side and so on. The scope rail is usually pretty solid and can handle plenty of force, but take care not to strip the screws with overtightening.

    • 4

Cut two strips of felt the width of the scope rings. They should be able to wrap around the scope without overlapping at the ends (approximately 2½ to 3 inches).

The felt will fill extra space within the scope rings, offering a tighter fit without overcompressing the scope.

    • 5

Place the felt strips along the length of the lower scope rings, and then place the scope in the lower scope assembly.

    • 6

Replace the upper scope assembly, making sure that the felt strips wrap all the way around the scope. Tighten the screws in a sequential pattern as before, but do not overtighten. Doing so can dent the scope, decreasing the amount of light that will reach the eye.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the felt strips are too thin, try thicker leather strips. The goal is to fill any empty space within the rings to prevent scope slippage.
