How to Calculate the Volume of Mass

How to Calculate the Volume of Mass thumbnail
Calculating volume

Volume is the space an object takes up in three dimensions. Given the density and mass of an object, a person can calculate its volume. Density equals mass divided by volume. By manipulating the formula, volume equals mass divided by density and mass equals density times volume.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the density and mass of the object. Find density on a density table. Determine mass by measuring the object on a scale. For example, gold has a density of 19.3 grams per centimeter cubed. The gold sample has a mass of 50 grams.

    • 2

Divide mass by density. In the example, 50 grams divided by 19.3 grams per centimeter cubed equals 2.591 centimeters cubed.

    • 3

Examine your work. Check the correct density on the table and remeasure the mass of the object. Redo calculations to eliminate any errors.
