How to Reduce Photo File Sizes for Free

If you have pictures that are too large and cannot be accepted on some websites, programs or even portable media devices, reducing the file size is a perfect solution. Different websites, programs and media devices set criteria for uploading pictures and do not accept pictures that are larger than their maximum dimensions. Without downloading a third-party program, picture sizes can be reduced in minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Resize your pictures online without downloading software. To do so, go to a free picture resizing website such as picresize.com, shrinkpictures.com, or resize.com.

    • 2

Click the "Choose File" button on the website being used. This launches file import dialog box. Locate the picture to be resized from the folder it was saved in, and then click "Open," or "Select" to import it to the picture resizing website.

    • 3

Select the size you want to use to resize the picture. Select from different options such as reducing the image by 75, 50 or 25 percent. Specify the custom size for the picture to be reduced.

    • 4

Specify whether or not to add any special effects such as gray scale, sepia, or Gaussian Blur. When finished, click the "Convert," Resize," or "Resize Pic" button depending on the website being used. The resizing website reduces the picture to the dimensions selected.

    • 5

Click "Download," or "Save to disk" to launch the file saving dialog box. Select the folder to save the picture in, type a name for the picture, and the click "Save" to download the picture to your computer.
