How to Convert Handwriting to Text on a Tablet PC

How to Convert Handwriting to Text on a Tablet PC thumbnail
Tablet PCs have sophisticated handwriting recognition capabilities.

Like traditional laptops, many Tablet PC models have keyboards, but a Tablet PC can also be used with the screen folded back down over the keyboard, rendering it inaccessible. The operating system includes an on-screen keyboard, but using it for an extended period can be slow and awkward. For this reason, Tablet PCs come with handwriting recognition, which lets you write on a special area of the screen using the pen that came with your tablet, and it will convert your handwriting into text in the active application.

Things You'll Need

  • Tablet PC
  • Windows XP Tablet Edition, or higher

Instructions

    • 1

Tap the area in the window into which you want to enter text, using the pen that came with your Tablet PC.

    • 2

Click the "Input Panel" button (which resembles a small window with a pen over it) in the task bar to open the Input Panel.

    • 3

Write your text in the Input Panel window. Your Tablet PC will automatically convert it to text after a short delay.

    • 4

If you make a mistake, scratch out the incorrect portion of text by making a short zig-zag motion (like a flattened letter "Z") over the text that you want to erase. You can then continue to write normally after that.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write as you would on paper---write on the baseline, use uppercase and lowercase letters with proper width-to-height ratio, and leave sufficient space between words.

  • You can print or write in cursive, but printing is usually easier for Tablet PC to recognize correctly.
