How to Make a Long Distance Call From the USA
Calling long-distance from the United States is similar to dialing a long-distance number within the country. Both long-distance and international numbers require a city/area code and a local number. International long-distance can cost significantly more than making long-distance calls within the country. Speak with a representative from your phone company about specific charges you may incur if you don't have an international calling plan.
Instructions
-
-
1
Dial the international call prefix of "011." This initiates a call to a number outside of the U.S.
-
2
Dial the country code. Each country code is different. To dial Brazil, for example, enter the country code of "55."
-
-
3
Enter the city code for the number you are calling. The international city code functions just like the area code within the U.S.
-
4
Dial the local phone number. With the combined international prefix, country code, city code, plus local number, you may dial a number that looks similar to this: 011-55-34-3483383

Tips & Warnings
Use a phone card to make long-distance or international phone calls. On the back of the card, find the toll-free phone number for the calling card company and the calling card's PIN number. Call the toll-free number. When prompted, enter the card's PIN, then dial the international number combination.
