Access the web through a USB adapter.

Wireless internet connections make it easy for a computer to access the web, however not all desktop computers offer a built-in wireless receiver. Without the receiver you typically must use an Ethernet cable to connect to the internet. The only way you can access a Wi-Fi network on a desktop computer is to add a USB Wi-Fi adapter to the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the USB Wi-Fi adapter into one of the available USB ports on your computer. A light appears on the adapter to signify a secure connection.

    • 2

Insert the driver installation CD. Because your computer does not have the appropriate tools to read a Wi-Fi network you need to add the drivers to the system. In a moment a driver installation wizard loads onto the screen.

    • 3

Read through and accept the license agreement. Choose "Next" for both the installation name and location. Adjusting the installation information can result in your computer being unable to detect the Wi-Fi network.

    • 4

Select "Install" and the USB's wireless drivers are installed. You may or may not be asked to restart the computer.

    • 5

Right-click the wireless icon that now appears in the lower-right corner of the desktop. It looks like a single computer monitor. Select "Enable" from the pull-up menu. Right-click the icon again and select the "Scan for Available Wi-Fi Networks" option.

    • 6

Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to from the window that loads onto your screen. If a lock icon appears next to the network name you need to type in a network password.

    • 7

Click "Connect" and the desktop computer connects to the wireless network.
