Learn to kick a field goal using the soccer style.

The two main ways to score points in football are with touchdowns and field goals. The football must pass through the uprights of the field goal post to count for three points. A kicker has the option to kick the field goal using any style. The soccer-style approach is widely used in American and Canadian football and is characterized by approaching the ball from an angle and using the instep of the foot.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ball on the tee or the ground with a slight backward tilt.

    • 2

Place your kicking foot behind where the ball is to be placed when snapped. The non-kicking leg is aligned to the side of the ball.

    • 3

Take three steps directly back from the ball starting with your kicking foot.

    • 4

Take two steps to the left (right foot kick) or two steps to the right (left foot kick) with both feet. Focus your eyes on the tee as you take your steps.

    • 5

Take two steps toward the football when you are ready to kick. The first step is taken with your kicking foot. The second step is taken with your non-kicking foot. The second step should be longer. Place the plant foot (non-kicking foot) about a half foot behind and to the left (if you kick right footed) or right (if you kick left footed). The toes of your planted foot should point in the direction of the goalpost.

    • 6

Start the kick with a downward motion. The toes of your kicking foot should be pointed slightly down and your ankle should be locked. Your hips should be faced toward the goal.

    • 7

Kick the ball using the top, inside portion of your foot. Make sure to keep your head down and focused on the tee and the ball.

    • 8

Follow through with the kick. Continue to swing your leg through the ball ensuring power and accuracy on the kick.
