You can install your own PCI modem

No matter what type of hardware you install in your computer, it is always helpful to have the original installation CD. The software CD contains valuable information, including the model number of the device, a troubleshooting guide and, of course, the drivers for each applicable operating system. Unfortunately, however, there are times when that installation CD simply is not available. When that happens there are a number of ways to get the drivers and support information you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your computer on if the PCI modem has already been installed. Log on and look for the "Found new device" message at the lower-right corner of the screen near the system tray. If your operating system detects the new modem, it will automatically try to download and install the proper driver.

    • 2

Shut your computer down if the modem was not detected automatically. Open the case and remove the modem from the PCI slot.

    • 3

Use the magnifying glass to find a label or identifying mark on the modem. Many modems will have a number of different markings, so it may take some time to find the actual part number or model number.

    • 4

Write down each number and marking on the modem. These numbers can be used to search for information about the modem.

    • 5

Try to find a manufacturer's mark on the modem. If you find the manufacturer, go to the company's website and then to the downloads section. Search for the driver for your model modem and operating system. Download and install the modem driver using the instructions provided on the manufacturer's website.

Type the part numbers you wrote down into a search engine if you cannot determine the manufacturer. Typing the part number and the word "modem," or "modem" and "driver," will generally provide more refined search results than just typing the part number. Locate the search result that contains the driver you need, then download and install that driver. Double-click the downloaded file and choose the "Install" option. Accept the default installation directory and choose "Next." Click "Finish" to complete the installation.
