How to Make Smileys on Gmail Chat

Use "smileys" to express emotion without using words.

Gmail Chat is the instant-messaging client built into your Gmail email account. It allows you to chat instantly with your Gmail contacts without the need to install an instant messenger. Emoticons, often called "smileys," are visual representations of different emotions. Gmail Chat includes four different types of emoticons that you can use to add personality to your conversations.

Instructions

1. Log into your Gmail account.

2. Log into Gmail Chat by clicking "Sign Into Chat." This option is located in the chat box, beneath the list of folders on the left side of your screen.

3. Click on the name of a contact that you want to chat with to open a conversation window. The window will appear in the lower-right corner of your Gmail screen.

4. Click on the blue "smiley" in the bottom-right corner of the chat window to open the list of emoticons.

5. Choose the emoticon that you want to send by clicking on it. Gmail offers four different styles of emoticons to choose from. After you have selected an emoticon, press "Enter" to send it to your friend.
