Changing the fluid in your transmission will keep your transmission strong for many years to come.

Honda recommends you change your Accord's transmission fluid every 30,000 miles to help ensure your transmission shifts smooth and accurately the entire life of the car. Checking your transmission once a month and replacing the fluid at regular intervals will also help keep the transmission clean and give you an indication of any developing problems if you see that the transmission fluid is not red in color.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the parking brake before working underneath the vehicle. Chock the back wheel with a cinder block.

    • 2

Raise the vehicle by placing the jack under the front axle. Raise high enough to place jack stands underneath the axles. Lower the car on to the jack stands.

    • 3

Place a drain pan underneath the transmission. (The transmission sits under the motor.)

    • 4

Locate the transmission oil pan at the bottom of the transmission. Unscrew the drain plug with a socket wrench. Allow the fluid to drain in to the drain pan.

    • 5

Tighten the plug back in to the transmission fluid drain pan with a socket wrench. Ensure the plug is tight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult your owner's manual before pouring in fresh transmission fluid. If you do not have access to the owner's manual, consult a Honda dealer for the correct transmission fluid type and amount.

  • Use extreme caution when working underneath the car. Be sure the car is parked on level ground and the parking brake is set.
