Play ball!

"Wii Sports" is a collection of five sports games for the Nintendo Wii. It includes bowling, golf, tennis, boxing and baseball. In baseball, you can throw a number of different pitches, including fastballs, change-ups, curveballs, screwballs and splitters. You can even pitch the ball submarine-style. Mastering the pitching mechanics of "Wii Sports" will help you win games against both the computer and human opponents.

Instructions

  1. Types of Pitches

    • 1

To throw a fastball, flick your wrist forward with a short, snapping motion. An elaborate wind-up and followthrough---while fun---will not help you throw any faster. The trick is in the wrist snap, which will "trick" the Wii sensor into believing you have moved your arm quickly.

    • 2

To throw a change-up, use the same method as throwing a fastball---except don't flick your wrist as hard. It's good to alternate between fastballs and change-ups to keep your opponent off balance.

    • 3

To throw a screwball, flick the Wii-mote forward while holding down the 'A' button. The ball will curve to the right.

    • 4

To throw a curveball, flick the Wii-mote forward while holding down the 'B' button. The ball will curve to the left.

    • 5

To throw a splitter, flick the Wii-mote forward while holding both the 'A' and the 'B' buttons. The pitch will resemble a change-up, except it will drop and hit the ground at the last moment. If the batter does not swing, this will always be called a ball.

Tips & Warnings

  • By pressing '2,' you will change to a submarine delivery. This won't fool a computer opponent, but it could keep a human opponent off balance. Press '1' to return to an overhand delivery.

  • A splitter is extremely difficult to hit, since it lands outside of the strike zone. However, if you do not hold both the 'A' and 'B' buttons down your entire motion, the pitcher will throw a "fat" pitch right down the center of the plate.

  • The most essential thing to remember is to constantly change speeds. Use your fastball to make your breaking pitches more effective.

  • Always "strap in" to your Wii-mote while playing "Wii Sports." If you're not strapped in, it's very easy to slip and send the controller sailing across the room.
