How to Open Your Own Day Care Business
Day care businesses are responsible for providing a safe and nurturing environment for children during the early years. Some of these professionals also provide after-school care to older children. Before launching a day care business, it's important to complete the required training and get licensed with your state.

1
Complete a pediatric first aid and CPR course. Not all states require these courses; however, these skills are essential when opening your own day care business. According to Entrepreneur Magazine, having this training also makes you more attractive to prospective parents. Find courses in your area by contacting the American Red Cross.

2
Install safety devices. Safety gates, childproof cupboard latches and plug protectors should be installed. Also, purchase fire extinguishers to place throughout the home. Small items that pose a choking hazard should be kept out of reach if you plan on watching small children. Chemicals should be moved to high cabinets that are locked. Check with your state's department of child care to get a safety checklist.

Purchase toys and entertainment items for your business. Different toys should be purchased for each age group you plan on watching. This will ensure all children are developmentally challenged. Cribs should be purchased for infants. Even if the infant will attend part-time, each child must have his own crib. Older children should have a nap mat and blanket for resting time.

Apply for a child care license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most states require day care businesses to be licensed. Each state has different requirements; however, an inspection of the day care site is usually required. Some states require day care owners to attend a course to become licensed. At a minimum, your state will require a background check (including family members residing in the same home). Find out local requirements by contacting your state's licensing department.

5
Market services to parents. Purchase an inexpensive ad in the community newspaper. Spread the word with friends and family members about your services. Post fliers at community centers and other social gathering spots.

Tips & Warnings
According to Entrepreneur magazine, launching a day care center has modest start-up costs ($2,000 or less). If you need assistance with these costs, contact the Small Business Administration. They can help you find small-business loan programs.
Don't forget to create an emergency plan. Some states require day care owners to have a backup person in the event of illness or other emergencies. Even if your state doesn't have this requirement, consider putting an emergency plan in place.
