How to Apply for a Section 8 Grant
The Section 8 grant program administered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is a federal subsidy available to low income persons, families and military veterans. The programs official name is the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The application process is fairly simple but there are certain steps you must take in order to apply for Section 8 grants.

Determine your income. This program is designed for people who earn less than half the median income in the area in which they live. If the median household income in your city is $45,000 per year, your household income must be $22,500 per year or less.

Contact your local Public Housing Agency. The Public Housing Agency (PHA) is the only place where you can apply for Section 8. You can find the location and contact information of your local PHA at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development website listed in the resource section below.

Be prepared to wait. Once you have been determined eligible for Section 8, you will likely still have a long wait time before you begin receiving your vouchers. How long the process will take depends largely on the availability of resources within your community, and typically, priority is given to families and individuals whose income is 30 percent or less than the median income of the area.

Select the most appropriate housing. You will be notified what type of housing you will qualify for based upon the size of your family and the needs of its membership. Once you receive a voucher, you will be required to search for housing that meets program requirements and whose owners/managers are willing to participate in the program.
