How to Calculate the KMH to MPH

Convert from metric to U.S. speed measuring systems.

Convert speed between the metric and U.S. measurement systems to find out how fast you travel. Nations using the metric system opt to use KMH (kilometers per hour) whereas in the United States, Americans talk about speed in miles per hour. Moving between these systems requires the use of a formula for converting kilometers to miles.

• Metric (kilometers) odometer
• Calculator (optional)

Instructions

1. Reset the trip odometer on your car so it reads 0 and drive for 10 minutes. Use the kilometers recorded on the trip odometer over 10 minutes for the distance traveled.

2. Calculate your speed in kilometers per hour by multiplying the distance traveled in 10 minutes by 6. For example, if you traveled 10 kilometers in 10 minutes, your speed in kilometers per hour equals 10 x 6 = 60 kilometers per hour.

3. Multiply your speed in kilometers per hour by 0.62137 to find the speed in miles per hour. Continuing with the example, multiply 60 kilometers per hour by 0.62137 to find the number of miles per hour: 60 x 0.62137 = 37.2822 miles per hour.
