How to Refill Fuel in a Lighter

A common design for a refillable lighter.

Anybody who regularly uses a lighter can benefit from using a refillable lighter rather than the disposable variety. Not only does it end up saving you money, but it drastically reduces the amount of waste you would normally create due to throwing away disposable lighters. To keep a refillable lighter in working order, you need to occasionally add fuel. With the proper care, a single lighter can last for several years.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for the lighter to cool down to room temperature if you recently used it.

    • 2

Reduce the flame adjuster so it is at a minimum height. Depending on your lighter, you will either have to twist a wheel clockwise or turn a screw clockwise with a screwdriver. The adjuster should be turned until it starts to feel tight.

    • 3

Press down on the refill valve with a screwdriver to remove all excess air. If air is in the lighter, you will not be able to add more fuel. You can tell all of the air is out when the lighter stops making a blowing noise.

Hold the lighter upside down and stick the nozzle of the lighter fluid into the lighter's refill valve. Press firmly for five seconds and then pull the lighter fluid away from the lighter.

    • 5

Wait for five minutes to ensure the lighter and the lighter fluid are at the same temperature. Return the flame adjuster back to your desired setting.
