A General Education Development (GED) certificate is recognized as an equivalent to a high school diploma. The American Council on Education (ACE) states that getting a GED can help you get a better education and job because it shows schools and employers that you have successfully demonstrated the knowledge and skills that a high school graduate has. GED exams test you in the subject areas of writing, reading, social studies, science and math. To get a GED in Detroit, you must meet certain requirements, take the GED test and obtain passing scores.

      Find out if you meet the eligibility requirements to take the GED exam. In general, if you are 16 years old and have been out of school for at least one year, you may take the test, according to Michigan.gov.

      Locate the closest GED testing center. To find the nearest location, use the testing center locator listed (See Resources).

      Select a testing center and call to find out their hours of operation, how much the testing fee is, and whether you need to make an appointment or if you can take the test on a walk-in basis. You may be asked to provide certain information about yourself especially if an appointment is required. The operator may also inform you of what to bring on test day, such as identification; make a note of this information.

      Prepare for the GED. There are several ways to prepare, including a GED preparation class. Detroit Public School's Office of Adult Education offers GED preparation classes and provides a waiver for the testing fee. Call 313-852-1089 for more information.Marygrove Learning Resource Center (MLRC) offers free GED classes, free GED testing, as well as job training for eligible candidates (See Resources).

      You can also prepare for the GED on your own by going to a library and taking sample exams in GED test prep books. Lastly, you can review sample GED questions online to get an idea of the test (See Resources).

      Take the GED on the day you planned to do so by showing up at the testing center. Bring your identification and other test-taking materials.

      Obtain your test scores from the center you tested at. Once you meet eligibility requirements, you will receive your GED certificate in the mail. These requirements include meeting the minimum age of 18, meeting the minimum GED test score criteria, which is an average score of 450 on all five subject tests and a score of 410 on individual tests.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disability accommodations are available to you if you require them.

  • The GED is offered in several languages: English, Spanish and French. Take the GED in the language you feel most comfortable with.

  • ACE warns against taking GED exams online as these companies are not related to the official GED exam. As a result, you will end up with a GED certificate that is not real. To make sure you are taking the official GED exam, locate an officially recognized testing center (See Resources).
