How to Make a Smaller KB and GIF Picture File

How to Make a Smaller KB and GIF Picture File thumbnail
GIF files are reduced with graphics software.

When putting images online at a website or social networking site such as Facebook, you may find that the images are too big to upload or that they show up very slowly on the webpage because they are too large. The same problem can occur when you're trying to email pictures to someone, because you may not be able to send the images when they're too big.

The size of a GIF image is reflected both in how much space it takes up on the computer screen--width by height dimensions--as well as how much space it takes up on a hard drive. The hard drive space size is generally displayed in KB or MB because it's a storage space size instead of a display size.

Changing the display height and width size is the quickest and easiest way to also reduce the storage space, or KB size.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a graphics software program such as The Gimp, Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

    • 2

Open the image GIF file you want to change the size of.

    • 3

Select the resize function from the menus in your graphics software. This function is located in different areas with various programs, and may be labeled slightly differently as well. In The Gimp, for example, you can select scale or resize from the image tools menu.

    • 4

Change the image size in the adjustment window that appears. Usually you can change it by percentages or pixel sizes. Reducing the size here will reduce the overall file KB size as well.

    • 5

Save the changed image with a different name so that you will still have a copy of the original large version size.

Tips & Warnings

  • How small the GIF and KB size will be depends on several factors: primarily what the height and width in number of pixels is and how much detail there is in the image. Sometimes you have to reduce the photo size more than once to get it to the smallest KB desired.

  • Depending on the graphics program you use, you can also select to lower the image quality or the number of colors used in the image to reduce its size further.
