How to Install Oblivion on a Windows XP UIF File

Oblivion is an award-winning role-playing game published by Bethesda Softworks. It is often transferred and stored as a .UIF file, to allow the user to install and play the game without a physical copy of the CD. To install Oblivion stored as a .UIF file on Windows XP, you need a CD/DVD image-file editor. UIF files are similar to ISO files; both are "images" of a CD or DVD that can be mounted (via a program like MagicISO) on a virtual drive.

Instructions

  1. Install an Image-Editing Program

    • 1

Download a CD/DVD image-file type editing program. MagicISO offers a freeware (trial) version of their product free of charge. Download the MagicISO program at Magiciso.com.

    • 2

Install MagicISO (or alternate program of your choosing) by following the directions listed with the software. The installation is simple and straightforward.

    • 3

Choose to download an alternate program if you do not wish to use MagicISO. Daemon Tools (Daemon-tools.cc) is a popular alternative.

    Install the UIF

    • 4

Navigate to the MagicISO .exe file: select the "All Programs" button from the Start menu, open the MagicISO folder in the list and run the .exe (by clicking "Run" when prompted). If you have the freeware version, you must click "Try it" in the program's greeting window to proceed. Navigate to the "Tools" tab of the main quick-bar at the top-left of the window.

    • 5

Scroll down to the third option listed in the Tools tab: "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM." Scroll your cursor to the right, following the arrow from the "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM" tab. Scroll over one of the listed virtual drives (often listed as "F" "J" or "K" depending on your computer's configuration). Select the option "Mount" at the top of the pop-up menu of your selected virtual drive.

    • 6

Locate the .UIF file of Oblivion stored on your computer (wherever you decided to save it when you got it). If you downloaded the Oblivion .UIF file, check your computer's default download folder if you can't find the file. Select the file and click the "Open" button. You may be prompted with a run option immediately after mounting the image (if so, skip step 4).

    • 7

Minimize MagicISO and navigate to the "My Computer" menu. Select the virtual drive mounting the UIF file; look for the drive that has "Oblivion" in the name. (e.g. DVD Drive F: Oblivion). Double-click on the drive or right click, and select "Run" from the pop-up menu to activate the file.

    • 8

Allow Oblivion to install from the CD/DVD image. This should take 15-20 minutes. To play Oblivion after installation, you must mount the image of the .UIF file. The game will not run if it does not detect the game CD in your drive. Re-mount the image when you want to play the game.
