How to Activate a Windows XP Product Key

Without activation you can't use Windows.

Starting with Windows XP Microsoft made registering its operating systems mandatory to prevent software from being pirated. Once each computer product key is registered, another person trying to register the same key for a different machine will not be able to and his installation of Windows will not work. Registering can feel like a pain but it really is simple and often done in just a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Go to the "Control Panel" and start the activation wizard. The activation wizard will bring up a window and ask if you want to activate over the Internet or over the phone.

2. Choose a way to activate Windows. Over the Internet is easier. If you have a dial up connection, connect to the Internet and then choose "Internet." You can also choose to register over the phone.

3. Allow the wizard to activate Windows online. If you are using the phone, call the number listed by the wizard. You will be required to give a long key that shows up in the window and Microsoft will give you another long key to enter into the system to complete activation.
