How to Kill Mold & Mildew in Showers Without Bleach

Mold and mildew are two harmful substances that develop mostly in areas of high moisture such as the bathtub or shower. Bleach is one way to kill the mold and mildew; however, bleach contains chemicals that could be considered just as harmful as the mold itself. Instead, use a simple natural cleaning solution that will remove the mold and mildew without introducing additional harmful elements to the home.

Things You'll Need

• Mask
• Gloves
• Spray bottle
• Water
• Vinegar
• Nylon scrub brush
• Toothbrush

Instructions

1. Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups warm water and 2 cups household vinegar. The vinegar is a natural disinfectant that will kill the mold and any associated odor or bacteria.

2. Saturate the moldy and mildewed area heavily with this spray. Let sit for two hours, then apply another coating of the vinegar solution.

3. Moisten a nylon scrub brush with the vinegar solution and scrub over the mold and mildew. Use a toothbrush to get between cracks and along grout lines.

4. Flush the shower with hot water to rinse away the mildew, mold and vinegar.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear a pair of gloves and a mask when cleaning the mold.

• Use this spray regularly as an all-purpose cleaner for your shower, as this will prevent future mold and mildew from accumulating.
