How to Shingle a New Roof
As your new home gets closer and closer to being finished, one of the finishing touches is installing the roofing. While several roofing choices tend to work best in different climates, the most common choice is to shingle the new roof. If you have are eager to get your roof installed and can't wait for a professional or you just want to save some of your hard-earned money, shingling the new roof yourself is a good alternative. Things You'll Need
- Hammer
- Roofing nails
- Tape measure
- Pencil and paper
- Calculator
- Roofing felt
- Ladder

Calculate the Surface Area of the Rooftop

Climb onto the roof of the building where you intend to install the new shingle roof, using a ladder.

Measure the length and width of the entire area of the rooftop with a tape measure and record them on a piece of paper.

Calculate the surface area of the roof to determine the amount of roofing felt and shingles you'll need. The sum of all of the surface area calculations will give you a good idea of the total surface area of the roof.
Shingle the New Roof

Roll roofing felt across the length of the roof along the bottom edge of the roof. Drive roofing nails into the edges of the roofing felt at 16-inch increments with a hammer. Repeat until you reach the peak of the roof. Make sure that each additional layer of roofing felt slightly overlaps the previous one.

Lay a layer of shingles along the bottom edge of the roof line across the entire length of the house. Drive two roofing nails just inside the top edge of each shingle to hold it in place.

Lay shingles and nail them to the roof until you reach the peak of the roof and the rooftop is covered. Offset each additional row of shingles with the prvevious by aligning the center of each of the shingles in the new row with the seam that runs between the shingles of the row before it.

Tips & Warnings
Multiply the length by the width of the rectangular portions of the rooftop to calculate the surface area. Calculate the surface area of the triangular portions of the roof by multiplying the length of the base of the triangle by the height and then divide that figure by two.
