Instructions

1
Use a chop saw or a miter saw to cut two 3-foot long pieces from of a 2-by-4 board.
-
2
Use a jig saw to cut notches in the center of each piece. Cut the notches out of the 4-inch side of boards. Make the notches 4 inches wide and 3/4-inch deep. Cut notches by sawing both short sides first. Then turn the saw blade in one of those cuts to curve in and cut the bottom of the notch. The notches will allow the two boards to lock together and form an X shape.

3
Lock the boards together. Drill two pilot holes at the intersection of the boards (through the notches). Screw the boards together with wood screws.
-
4
Drill pilot holes 1/2 to 3/4-inch from the ends of each board. Screw eyelet screws into each pilot hole.
-
5
Place a galvanized oil-change pan on top so it is centered on the X. Hammer nails into the boards, around the perimeter of oil-change pan. Hammer the nails only part way in so that the heads sit just over the lip of the pan. This will hold down the pan and prevent it from shifting.
-
6
Knot the end of a nylon cord or nylon braided rope in one of the eyelet screws.
-
7
Set the tree into the oil-change pan.
-
8
Secure the tree by wrapping the cord around one of the bottom branches, looping it through the second eyelet screw, taking it back up and around another bottom branch, back down and through the third eyelet screw, and back up to a bottom branch. Tie off the nylon cord in the last eyelet screw.
-
9
Fill the pan with water.
-
10
Conceal the stand and cord with the Christmas tree skirt of your choice.
