How to Clean Air Conditioning Filters

How to Clean Air Conditioning Filters thumbnail
HVAC return air ducts require cleaning occasionally to provide fresh air for a home.

Air conditioning filters can be electrostatically charged to capture dust, debris, pet dander and allergens that would otherwise invade a home and cause unclean air. Particles that enter into the A/C system from dirty air filters will make the system work harder and cause higher electricity bills and can eventually make their way to components, leading to replacement of the entire system. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Window Air Conditioners

    • 1

Remove the nondisposable air conditioning filter by sliding it completely out of the front grill. The edge of the filter frame protrudes on either one side or both sides of the grill. Grasp the edge and pull in either direction to remove the filter.

    • 2

Vacuum the filter to remove loose allergens, spores and dust. Fill the kitchen sink with warm water and dish soap. Use a cloth to wash the filter thoroughly until it is easy to see through and there is not any dirty water coming out of the filter.

    • 3

Rinse the filter thoroughly with clean water. Dry the filter with a clean towel and set it aside on the towel. Let the filter dry completely before putting it back into the air conditioning unit.

    • 4

Push the filter back into position in the slot behind the grill after it is completely dry.

Use a flat head screwdriver to loosen the screw on the air conditioner return air vent. Turn the screw in a counterclockwise direction.

    • 6

Pull down the tab on the return air vent door and let it hang open by its hinges. Grasp the air conditioning filter and pull it out. Most HVAC filters are disposable so they require replacement instead of cleaning. Cleaning with this method will suffice until buying a new filter.

    • 7

Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the loose debris, dust and allergens from the filter. Replace the filter in the return air vent by pressing into the frame. Close the door and hold in place while starting the screw with the other hand. Turn the screw clockwise by hand about two revolutions until the door stays in place. Continue tightening the screw with a screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not tear the filter while cleaning or it will not protect the air conditioning coils from building up with dust and particles.

  • In heavy use months when it is hot outside, clean the filter once a week for best performance of the unit.

  • Do not wash an HVAC disposable filter with water. This type of filter has a cardboard frame, which will become wet, take hours to dry completely and can trap excess moisture dirt and allergens inside the cardboard.
