How to Build an Author Platform

Becoming an established author can seem like an overwhelming process. There are conferences, book signings and author readings to attend. There are also negative aspects of the job like rejections, critiques and bad reviews. Overall, with the right amount of preparation and planning, an author can build his or her own platform for writing success. With the right amount of strategy and networking, an author can make a name for him or herself.

Building Your Platform

1. Consider the type of audience you want to write for, i.e. children, young adults, adults. Also think about the type of writing you want to do such as fiction or non-fiction. When deciding, consider your marketability as a writer. Keep in mind your niche or speciality. When just starting out, it is a good idea to write about what you know and expand upon your expertise.

2. Connect locally. Interview other authors to see how they made a name for themselves. Attend author readings and local writing groups.

3. Network online through sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and blog hosting networks. Freelance write as much as possible.

4. Become a member in a statewide or regional professional writer's organization or association.

5. Volunteer for a local charity. Most of the time local charities can use an extra hand, especially if the person is a prolific and knowledgable writer. Use your talents and skills to do something good.

6. Start a blog. A blog is an online journal or diary. This is also a great way to network with other writers as well as give feedback and receive it.

7. Get interviews. It doesn't matter if it is by phone, e-mail, in person or by radio. Establishing media contacts is important for the livelihood of any writer. Be sure when in the public eye, to always be camera ready and friendly. There is something to be said about putting your best foot forward.

8. Teach a class. Check with local colleges to see if they need a part-time English or writing teacher. Start your own writing club. Ask local churchs and private schools to hire you on part-time as a co-op instructor.

9. Attend writers workshops and conferences.

10. Build a website. Include a professional bio, which highlights your achievements and abilities.
