How to Add Links to a Bike Chain
A bicycle chain must be a certain length in order to work properly. A chain that is too short will not access the full range of gears; a chain that is too long may skip or even slip from the front chain ring. Bicycle chains are composed of a series of links, joined by rivets. By removing these rivets, the chain can be separated so that further links can be added.
Things You'll Need
- Chain tool
- Needle-nose pliers (as needed)
- Link(s)
- Replacement rivets
- Chain lube

1
Select a link somewhere along the chain. If the chain is still on the bicycle, it's easiest to work on the lower portion of chain between the front chain ring and rear derailleur. There's less here to obstruct your hands.
-
2
Place the selected links inside the chain tool. The chain tool pin should be pointing directly at the rivet that joins the two links.
-
-
3
Turn the handle on the chain tool clockwise until the pin comes into contact with the rivet in the chain. Once the two are aligned, continue turning the handle (it will get increasingly difficult as the pin meets resistance) until you drive the rivet from the chain.
-
4
Attach a new link to the existing chain. A chain is composed of alternating inner and outer links, so the link you attach must be compatible with the ends of the chain. As soon as you join the links, secure them by inserting the end of a new rivet through their center.
-
5
Place the newly combined links in the cradle of your chain tool with the chain tool pin directly facing the new rivet.
-
6
Turn the handle of the chain tool clockwise, and drive the rivet into the center of the chain. Some rivets will feature a tapered guide pin at the tip. Once the rivet is seated, break the guide pin off with a pair of needle nose pliers.
-
7
Connect the other end of the new link to the chain, by repeating Steps 5 and 6. This will close the ends of the chain.
-
8
Lubricate the new rivets and work the lube in by rotating the new links back and forth. This will prevent stiffness in the new links.
