How to Clean Hard Water Stains From Granite
Granite is a natural stone that is both durable and resilient. Granite is not, however, completely stain-proof. Stains on granite from hard water are unsightly and diminish the appearance of the stone surface. These stains often appear in a chalky-white form. Remove water stains from granite promptly to preserve the beauty of the surface. Does this Spark an idea?

- White vinegar
- Rags
- 3 tsp. baking soda or 1 cup unbleached flour
- Liquid dish soap
- Water

Instructions

1
Saturate a paper towel with white vinegar. Place the paper towel directly onto the water stain.
-
2
Allow the vinegar-soaked paper towel to remain on the stain for 24 hours. Remove the paper towel and wipe the granite with a damp rag.

3
Make a poultice if the water stain persists. The idea of a poultice is to draw the stain from the granite into the poultice. Combine 3 tsp. baking soda and 1 tsp. water into a bowl and stir. Alternatively, use 1 cup unbleached flour, 3 tbsp. liquid dish soap and about 4 tbsp. water to form a poultice. The consistency of the paste should be that of sour cream.
-
4
Lightly mist the stained granite with water. Spread a coating of the paste about 1/4- inch thick onto the water stain, overlapping the stain by about 1/4 inch. Use your fingers to spread the paste and rub it into the stone.
-
5
Cover the poultice with plastic wrap. Use tape to secure the edges of the plastic wrap to the granite.
-
6
Allow the poultice to remain on the granite for 24 hours. Remove the plastic wrap and wipe up the poultice with a damp rag.
-
7
Clean the affected area of the granite with a mild soap and water. Buff the area dry with a clean rag.
-
8
Repeat this process, if necessary. It may take more than one application of the poultice to completely remove the water mark.
