How to Use Swimming Pool Vacuum Cleaners With Sand Filters

You should vacuum your swimming pool at least once a week or more depending on how much debris is in the water. Debris that is allowed to remain in the pool water can cause the water to turn green with algae and reduce or increase the pH, chlorine and calcium levels. If you have a sand filter, you must use the right equipment and set up the vacuum correctly to get the best vacuum pressure.

Things You'll Need

  • Telescoping pole
  • Vacuum head
  • Skimmer face plate
  • Vacuum hose
  • Attach the vacuum head to the telescopic pole, which fits into the round slot on the center of the vacuum hose. Press the clips in on the telescopic pole, and push the pole into the slot.

  • Lay the vacuum hose straight out on the side of the pool. Attach the hose to the vacuum head by pushing it into the cuff. Attach the skimmer plate to the other end of the vacuum hose.

  • Put the vacuum head in the pool with the head resting on the pool floor. Place the length of the vacuum hose in the water while holding on to the end with the skimmer plate.

  • Place the end with the skimmer plate over one of the filter jets. Allow the hose to fill with water so that there are no air pockets in the hose. When the hose is filled with water, remove the skimmer basket cover. Place the skimmer plate on the hose on top of the skimmer to create suction for vacuuming.

  • Glide the vacuum head with the pole around the pool floor to vacuum and remove debris. Start in the shallow end, and work your way to the deep end.

  • Clean the debris out of the skimmer basket when finished, and replace the cover. Disassemble the vacuum system, and allow everything to dry in the sun before putting away.
