How to Clean a Hayward Sand Filter System

How to Clean a Hayward Sand Filter System thumbnail
A clean pool is much more enjoyable to swim in.

The Hayward sand filter system requires cleaning when the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 per square inch (PSI) above the reading it was at start-up. Some gauges have a color grid to tell you when the filter needs to be cleaned. If you have a gauge with a red warning section, you must backwash the pool when the needle moves into the red. If the needle is in the green or white section, the filter is clean. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Roll out the backwash hose that is connected to the waste outlet. The hose should be long enough to drain the water away from the pool and any flower gardens.

    • 2

Turn off the pool pump, and turn the multiport valve handle to the "Backwash" position on the dial face.

    • 3

Power on the pump, and run the pump until you see clean water running through the sight glass on the pump. Turn off the pump when you see clear water.

    • 4

Turn the valve handle to the "Rinse" position. Turn on the pump. Run for 30 seconds. Turn off the pump.

    • 5

Move the multiport valve handle to the "Filter" position for normal operating and filtering. Turn on the pump.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the water level to make sure it is between the marks on the skimmer. Add water if necessary.

  • Make a mental note of where the pressure gauge is for a clean reading on the sand filter pump.
