How to Remove Rust Off Stainless Knives
While the name may lead you to believe that it will remain stain-free, stainless steel knives are merely stain-resistant, which means they are less likely to develop stains. If you don't rinse your stainless steel cutlery after use or you leave it wet, you may find that it develops rust. Fortunately, you can most likely restore your knives back to their original appearance by removing the rust with some common household products. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 1/4 tsp. mild, non-chlorine powdered detergent
- Scouring pad
- Water
- Soft lint-free towel

Wet a scouring pad under warm water and squeeze lightly so that the sponge is damp but not dripping.

Apply 1/4 tsp. of mild, non-chlorine powdered detergent to the sponge and rub it into the sponge with your fingertips.

Scrub the rusted areas of the stainless steel knife with the detergent-covered sponge. You may have to work diligently to fully remove all of the rust. Apply more powdered detergent to the sponge if needed.

Rinse the knife under warm, running water to remove all of the detergent residue. Dry thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings
If the detergent doesn't work, try mixing a paste of 1 tbsp. of water with 3 tbsp. of baking soda. Apply the baking soda paste just as you would the detergent, rinse and dry thoroughly.
Remove knives from the dishwasher immediately and dry them to avoid rusting.
Always rinse your knives after use. Some foods can cause corrosion and rusting.
Avoid using abrasive or harsh cleaners on your stainless steel knives as the surfaces could become permanently scratched.
