How to Make Homemade Crappie Lures
Jigs are a popular lure for catching crappie. From small farm ponds to lakes crappie jigs are highly effective lures for large crappie or slabs. Rigged using different methods, jigs are available in a wide range of colors from chartreuse green to black and hot pink. Many crappie anglers enjoy making their own jig lures as a hobby and to customize and fine-tune color patterns. Tying a crappie jig requires relatively few components and a short amount of time.

1
Attach a jig head hook to the jaws of your fly-tying vise. Position the hook so it is held in place by the bend in the hook with the point and barb on the bottom. Place the thread of choice in the bobbin so it is ready for use.
-
2
Wrap several turns of thread from the base of the lead head along the formed neck. There will typically be a formed lead extension behind the head of the round lead head with a small bait-holding point.

3
Select a clump of hairs or feathers as dressing. Place the dressing evenly around the shank of the hook and secure in place with several wraps of thread.
-
4
Continue wrapping thread from the base of the lead head to the bait-holding point to form a body for the jig. Tie the thread off with two overhand knots and cut the thread with a pair of scissors.
-
5
Apply a coating of clear nail polish to seal the thread and prevent unraveling.
